ABSTRACT

Las frutas exóticas se encuentran dentro del grupo de las frutas tropicales y su carácter perecedero limita su exportación a mercados distantes. En general, su consumo es local, son subutilizadas o poco valoradas tanto en el hogar como industrialmente; sin embargo, debido su alto valor nutricional, su consumo se ha incrementado significativamente en los últimos años. Estas frutas son fuente de compuestos bioactivos como fibra, vitamina C, carotenoides, ácidos fenólicos y polifenoles, los cuales han sido asociados a la reducción de los riesgos de enfermedades crónicas causadas por el estrés oxidativo. Estos compuestos bioactivos han demostrado que poseen varias actividades biológicas in vitro e in vivo incluyendo actividad antioxidante, antimicrobiana, antiinflamatoria, antiedad, neuroprotectora y antiviral entre otras. Por lo tanto, la obtención de ingredientes funcionales a partir de las frutas tropicales consideradas exóticas resulta viable; así como su utilización para el desarrollo de alimentos funcionales y nutracéuticos, para elaboración de productos de la industria farmacéutica y la conservación de alimentos. En la presente revisión se discute la información más relevante publicada en el período 2010-2020 de las principales bases de datos científicas, incluyendo Scopus, Science Direct, PubMed, Medline y Scielo, sobre los compuestos fenólicos y las bioactividades reportadas de las frutas tropicales exóticas como acai (Euterpe oleraceae), acerola (Malpighia emarginata), buruti (Mauritia flexuosa) caqui (Diospyros kaki), chicozapote (Manilkara zapota), litchi (Litchi chinensis), maracuyá (Passiflora edulis), noni (Morinda citrifolia) rambután (Nephelium lappaceum), pitaya blanca (Hylocereus undatus), pitaya roja (Hylocereus polyrhizus) y su relación con sus potenciales efectos benéficos en la salud(AU)


Exotic fruits are found in the group of tropical fruits and their perishable nature limits their export to distant markets. In general, their consumption is local; they are underutilized or little valued both at home and industrially; however, its consumption has increased significantly in recent years due to its high nutritional value. These fruits are a source of bioactive compounds such as fiber, vitamin C, carotenoids, phenolic acids and polyphenols, which have been associated with reducing the risks of chronic diseases caused by oxidative stress. These bioactive compounds have been shown to possess various in vitro and in vivo biological activities, including antioxidant, antimicrobial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, anti-aging, neuroprotective, and among others. Therefore, obtaining functional ingredients from tropical fruits considered exotic is viable and used to develop functional and nutraceutical foods, prepare products for the pharmaceutical industry and food preservation. This review discusses the most relevant information published in the 2010-2020 period from the main scientific databases, including Scopus, Science Direct, PubMed, Medline and Scielo, on phenolic compounds and reported bioactivities of exotic tropical fruits such as acai (Euterpe oleraceae), acerola (Malpighia emarginata), persimmon (Diospyros kaki), chicozapote (Manilkara zapota), litchi (Litchi chinensis), passion fruit (Passiflora edulis) noni (Morinda citrifolia), rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum), white pitaya (Hylocereus undatus) and red pitaya (Hylocereus polyrhizus) and their relationship with their potential beneficial effects on health(AU)

ABSTRACT

Background Millepora alcicornis is a branching hydrocoral common throughout the Caribbean Sea. Like other members of this genus, this species is capable of inducing skin eruptions and blisters with severe pain after contact. In the present study, we investigated the toxicity of theM. alcicornis aqueous extract on several animal models. Considering that some cnidarian hemolysins have been associated to local tissue damage, since they also induce lysis of other cell types, we also made a partial characterization of the hemolytic activity of M. alcicornis aqueous extract. This information is important for understanding the defense mechanisms of the fire corals.Methods The effects of pH, temperature, and some divalent cations on the hemolytic activity of the extract were assayed, followed by a zymogram analysis to detect the cytolysins and determine their approximate molecular weight. The toxicity of the aqueous extract was assayed in mice, by intravenous administration, and histopathological changes on several tissues were analyzed by light microscopy. The toxicity of the extract was also tested inArtemia salina nauplii, and the damages caused on the crustaceans were analyzed by transmission and scanning electron microscopy.Results The hemolytic activity of the hydrocoral extract was enhanced in the presence of Ca 2+ (2 mM), Mg 2+ (6 mM), and Ba2+ (0.1 mM); however, it was reduced in the presence of Cu2+(0.1 mM), Zn 2+ (6 mM), and EDTA (0.34 mM). Differences in the pH did not affect the hemolytic activity, but it was temperature-sensitive, since preincubation at 50 °C sharply reduced hemolysis. The zymogram showed the presence of two types of hemolysins: ~ 2830 kDa proteins with phospholipase A 2 activity and ~ 200 kDa proteins that do not elicit enzymatic activity. The aqueous extract of this cnidarian was lethal to mice (LD 50 = 17 g protein/g), and induced kidney, liver, and lung damages. Under denaturing conditions, the aqueous extract completely lost its toxic and hemolytic activities.Conclusions The results showed that the M. alcicornis aqueous extract contains two types of thermolabile hemolysins: proteins of approximately 2830 kDa with PLA 2 activity, while the others are larger proteins of approximately 200 kDa, which do not possess PLA 2activity. Those thermolabile cytolysins, which are stable to pH changes and whose activity is calcium dependent, are capable of inducing damage in lung, kidney and liver tissues, resulting in a slow death of mice. M. alcicorniscytolysins also provoke tissue dissociation inArtemia salina nauplii that might be attributed to pore forming mechanisms.

Introducción: El Método de Aprendizaje Basado en Problemas se fundamenta en las teorías constructivistasdel aprendizaje, en los principios del aprendizaje de los adultos y en el desarrollo de modelos andragógicos.Tiene el propósito de ayudar a los estudiantes a desarrollar habilidades para dirigir su propio aprendizaje.Objetivo: Analizar el papel de los profesores en su rol de facilitadores del aprendizaje autodirigido de los estudiantes de Licenciatura en Enfermería de la Universidad de Colima, México. Metodología: Estudiodescriptivo y transversal; se utilizó una muestra por conveniencia de 121 estudiantes. Para evaluar si los profesores facilitan la formación de habilidades,se diseñó un instrumento tipo inventario con 20 reactivos, los cuales fueron integrados en tres áreas: administración de la información, proceso de grupo, reflexión y pensamiento crítico. Por medio del alpha de Cronbach se obtuvo una confiabilidad de 0.96. Resultados: Al aplicar la prueba Kruskal-Wallis se encontraron diferencias estadísticamente significativas sólo para la dimensión “Proceso de grupo” entre los grupos de 4º y 6º semestres (H = 6.77; P < 0.05). Sin embargo, aunque en las otras dimensiones no se encontraron diferencias estadísticamente significativas, sí se logra identificar cambios en la tendencia de la opinión de los estudiantes hacia el rol de los tutores. Conclusiones: La evaluación sobre las tareas del tutor es favorable; los estudiantes afirman que “casi siempre” facilita, ayuda, promueve o colabora en el desarrollo de las habilidades que les permitirán ser estudiantes autodirigidos


Problem-Based Learning method is based on constructivist theories of learning, the principles of adult learning and the development of andragogical models. Its objective is to help students develop skills to direct their own learning. Objective: to analyse the role of professors of the bachelor’s degree in nursing as facilitators of self-directed learning Licenciatura in nursing of the University of Colima Mexico. Methodology: with the use of a descriptive survey integrated with 20 items answered by 121 students, we assessed the role of the professors of a bachelor’s degree in nursing. The 20 items assessed three areas of the facilitation process: Management of information, group process and reflection and critical thinking. These items were verified with Cronbach’s alpha and a reliability of 0.96. Results: when the Kruskal-Wallis survey was conducted, statistically significant differences were found only with regard to the “Group processing” dimension among sophomores and juniors (H = 6.77; P < 0.05). Even though no statistically significant differences were found with regard to the other dimensions, it is possible to detect shifts in the students’ opinion trend about the role of tutors. Conclusion: The overall average score per scale makes it possible to conclude that the “the work of the tutor” is viewed favourably, considering that the students report that their tutor “almost always” facilitates, assists, promotes or collaborates on the development of the skills for being a self directed learner

ABSTRACT

Surgical Eye-camps for cataract treatment of low-income adult Mexicans have been undertaken over the last 10 years. Despite the high prevalence of cataracts among these subjects, no assessment of their nutritional or health status has ever been made. We compare the results obtained for 81 adults (44 men and 37 women) who received treatment in May 1997 with those for a "control" group of age and sex-matched but affluent individuals in Mexico City. alpha-Tocopherol and beta-carotene were assessed and analysed by HPLC and colorimetric procedures, respectively. The plasma tocopherol to cholesterol ratio did not reveal deficiencies of this vitamin, and only 5 patients (2 men and 3 women) had low beta-carotene plasma levels. The patients had high BMI values, with 32 of men and 30 of women overweight, and 2 and 14, respectively, obese, with higher glucose, cholesterol and triglyceride values reflecting enhanced insulin resistance and lipid abnormalities. The alkaline phosphatase values were elevated suggesting that many of these blind patients are osteomalacic because they now remain indoors. Although it has been suggested that an adequate intake of carotenes and tocopherol are associated with absence of cataract, this appears not to be the case in our study population. Surveys in Mexico have revealed, however, a highly prevalent deficiency of other vitamins such as niacin and riboflavin, both of which have been proved to be protective against cataract. It appears that nutritional deficiencies, obesity, incipient diabetes and lipid disorders co-exist in modern Mexico. We have identified a need for research to aid the design of preventive nutritional approaches at the population level that could be applied in parallel with ongoing surgical treatment.

ABSTRACT

Objetivo. Proporcionar un modelo de evaluación de exactitud interna ilustrando su empleo en un programa de control de mediciones químico-enzimáticas. Métodos. El modelo emplea datos transformados a porcentaje de valor asignado (por cientoVA) que permiten englobar datos de controles diferentes, y de allí obtener un CV promedio que evalúa precisión así como un promedio de promedios (por cientoVAPP) y su DE por ciento que evalúan exactitud. El modelo se aplicó a 17,280 datos de 23 analitos medidos en siete parejas de controles (concentraciones media y alta) durante cuatro años en dos aparatos automatizados. Resultados. El modelo estableció inexactitud de 5 por ciento a 25 por ciento en siete analitos, cinco de ellos enzimas. Además detectó diferencias de exactitud interaparatos en 5/23 analitos (22 por ciento) y valor asignado erróneo en 19/304 controles (6 por ciento). Conclusiones. El modelo mostró su capacidad de disecar las fuentes de variación de exactitud. Hubo inexactitud en 30 por ciento de los analitos pero faltan estudios de continuación con controles de otras fuentes para validar estas inexactitudes. El modelo puede ser útil para el seguimiento de los programas de control de cualquier sistema de medición cuantitativa. Se ofrece un esquema resumido de manejo del modelo.
